1. As far as I recall I installed SP3 from the exe file I had previously downloaded, then I installed the Internet connection and immediately went to Windows update, then I installed AVG Free and downloaded updates for it.
And how long was the computer
connected to the internet before you installed AVG Free 9.0 & got it fully-updated?
Was the Windows Firewall enabled
immediately after you did the clean install of WinXP (i.e., before the computer was ever connected to the internet or a local network)?
See if the behavior persists after (1) uninstalling AVG & rebooting and then (2) reinstalling AVG, this time opting for a CUSTOM install and
not installing Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, Security toolbar, or any of the email scanning components.
Tip: Download/save the installer for AVG to your desktop so that you can reinstall it without being connected to the internet. After installing, connect to the internet to validate the install and to manually & repeatedly update the app using the Update Now link in the AVG UI.
Tip: Instead of reinstalling AVG, consider installing
Microsoft Security Essentials or
Avira AntiVir (both free).
