Recently when browsing IE7 + SP3 slows down when loading new pages or reloading the current page. I've looked everywhere I can think of but am having no luck curing the problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled IE7 but the problem persists.

I'm running XP media centre which is regularly updated, AVG free anti virus and Zone alarm fire firewall also Windows Defender, Spy Bot, S*PERAntiSpyware and Spyware blaster. All are regularly updated and set to default. settings.

Can you help?

Same computer as in http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=42426?

WinXP SP2 or SP3? Fully-patched at Windows Update?

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode? To start IE in No Add-ons mode:

=> Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer (No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. Assuming they were installed at the time, did you disable AVG, ZA, Spybot SDHelper & Tea Timer, and STUPIDAntiSpyware and then enable the Windows Firewall prior to installing IE7 and/or any WinXP Service Packs?

4. Did the computer come with a Norton or McAfee free-trial preinstalled (and which would have been reinstalled, but invalid, when you reinstalled WinXP?

5. Speaking of which, you didn't do a Repair Install, right?

Yes it is the same PC.

Win XP + SP3, SP3 downloaded & installed immediately after installation along with updates.

The slowing up and stopping continues when used without add-ons.

IE7 installed before AVG, ZA, Spybot SDHelper & Tea Timer, and STUPIDAntiSpyware installed. Spybots Tea Timer is not running.

No preinstalled McAfee or Norton.

I did a reinstall not a repair

1. How long was the computer connected to the internet or any local networks/other computers before (a) you got the computer fully-patched at Windows Update and (b) installed & fully-updated AVG Free?

2. Did you insert a USB key that wasn't brand-new or hadn't been freshly formatted before (a) you got the computer fully-patched at Windows Update and (b) installed & fully-updated AVG Free?

3. Are you running AVG Free v8.5 or v9.0? Is AVG's Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, and/or Security toolbar installed?

!, As far as I recall I installed SP3 from the exe file I had previously downloaded, then I installed the Internet connection and immediately went to Windows update, then I installed AVG Free and downloaded updates for it.

2, No.

3, AVG Free v9.0. Link scanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield installed but not security tool bar.

4, It still slows down after RIES.

And how long was the computer connected to the internet before you installed AVG Free 9.0 & got it fully-updated?

Was the Windows Firewall enabled immediately after you did the clean install of WinXP (i.e., before the computer was ever connected to the internet or a local network)?

See if the behavior persists after (1) uninstalling AVG & rebooting and then (2) reinstalling AVG, this time opting for a CUSTOM install and not installing Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, Security toolbar, or any of the email scanning components.
Tip: Download/save the installer for AVG to your desktop so that you can reinstall it without being connected to the internet. After installing, connect to the internet to validate the install and to manually & repeatedly update the app using the Update Now link in the AVG UI.

Tip: Instead of reinstalling AVG, consider installing Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira AntiVir (both free).

I honestly cannot remember how long I was on the 'net downloading updates before I installed AVG. I was not connected to the 'net when I installed AVG, I tend to keep downloaded files in case they are needed again. After installing AVG I went on the 'net and updated it.

I installed and activated Defender from a previously downloaded .msi file before going on the 'net to update.

I have uninstalled AVG 9 and reinstalled it without Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, Security toolbar, or any of the email scanning components.

This seems to have done the trick as IE7 is behaving normally and the problem has gone away.

Is Microsoft Security Essentials a good substitute for AVG as I've never seen or heard of it before?

Also I notice that you called S*PERAntiSpyware STUPIDantispyware. Are you implying it's not worth keeping and that I should get rid of it.

Great!

Anything's better than AVG IMHO (except for a Norton or McAfee application).

MSE was released in late Sept-09 after several months in beta. It's working just fine for the vast majority of users who've installed it. MSE includes anti-virus and anti-spware components (the latter replaces Windows Defender).

IMHO, yes.
