I also removed malware that appeared through my browser. I now find that I have no system restore at all. It does not exist anywhere. When I open system protection, both system restore and create are unavailable. Under available disks I get "searching." Any new updates from Microsoft get hung up on creating a restore point. I am running Vista Home. I've had no problems until this malware hit (Anti-Virus Pro). I do have Norton Anti Virus, but that has never been a problem. I tried the fix above, but that didn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

My system is working fine, so I'm hesitant to go into Safe Mode and select "Last working restore point" or whatever it is.

Hello Hyperbole and welcome to AumHa.

Show all files:
  • Click the Start button, and then click Computer.
  • On the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Locate and uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Locate and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  • Locate and click Show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Apply > OK.
Click Start (Vista Orb), type services.msc in the Start Search box, and then click services.msc in the Programs list.
Locate the entry for System Restore Service
What does it show for status?

Do NOT use System Resore or any Last Known Good. I only want to know what the status is.

Tell us how you managed to try to clean the infection by Anti-Virus Pro.
And if you did it by yourself, then, I'd suggest you do the following
read and do the steps outlined here --> viewtopic.php?f=30&t=4075

and then start a NEW topic on the Malware Removal sub-forum here -->> viewtopic.php?f=30

In there include all the reports in the body of the reply.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I can only get part way through this process you recommend. All references on my computer to system restore are gone. I cannot get to System Restore Service because it isn't there (no entry). I can't determine what the status is because there is nothing to determine it from. I have Norton installed on my computer and I keep it up to date, but it didn't catch the virus. I installed Yahoo Anti-spy and PC Tools, and I used them to scan the system. They did delete some highlighted files with one trojan. I haven't had the problem of my screen locking up with an Anti-Virus Pro screen superimposed over the normal screen since I did. I uninstalled these programs because some information stated they don't allow idle time, and that could be causing my hangup problem that I was having with updates trying to create a restore point. I then installed Malawarebytes and Spybot SD Resident which are now on on my machine. I've scanned the computer with four programs now, and it comes up clean (minus the restore function). I tried a regedit fix that was recommended on winonline.com to get around the same problem when Group Policy is involved (but it isn't in this case). That didn't work, and that notation is still in the registry. Is there a way to install the restore function without a full re-install?

By the way, I have a full backup online through Roxio. It backs up all my files. Unfortunately, I don't have any idea what I'm looking for to restore it. I'm also a bit worried that my backup has backed up the virus as well. I'll take your advice about Anti-Virus Pro, and I'll start a new topic as well. Thanks.
