Good morning,

I am unable to connect to the internet via the Charter cable connection to the Intel Pro/100VE Ethernet card in my Micron PC running XP Pro S2. One minute the connection was working & then it stopped. Control Panel tells me that the LAN is “Acquiring network address”. But it never does. When I click “repair” I get the message “Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address”.

I tried ipconfig/renew. I got a message RPC server unavailable. My Motorola cable modem was purchased new in 12/08 and is hooked to a Linksys WRT54G Router. I am able to connect to the net using my laptop either through the router or directly linked to the modem. Nothing works with the desktop pc. I have run 2 complete AV scans (Avast freebie) and SpyBot with no infections presented. I have run a hardware check on the Ethernet card & XP says it is OK. Just to be sure I un-installed and re-installed the card. XP continues to say it is functioning properly. Charter is telling me that this is a XP problem.

Since my laptop can connect without a hitch I am assuming that Charter is communicating properly and sending out an IP address (dynamic not static so I cannot manually enter an IP address) I am at a loss as to what to do next. My thought was to purchase a new Ethernet card since that is what the modem/router is connected to communicate with my pc. Can anyone give me a helping hand???

Update: I purchased a Linksys Ethernet adapter & tried to install it after un-installing the Intel adapter. I could not get it to work. Called Linksys & was told that it is defective (code 10 error) They also commented that they did not think that the Intel integrated adapter was at fault & that it appears to be a compromised XP file somewhere. Also, Device Manager kept re-installing the Intel adapter everytime I re-booted.

Still needing some serious help!!!! I am way over my head here & need to get this desktop back on line.

If you have a non-windows/third-party firewall like Zone Alarm or Comodo uninstall it then Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt. Type with an Enter after each line:

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine. Any better?

Ron, thanks for the reply....I did try that procedure before I read your post & it did not fix the problem. So, I packed up my pc and brought it to a local fixer. It is an XP problem, but we could not locate it quickly. We are in process of cloning my HD and doing a clean install of XP Pro on a new HD.
