Updating to JRE v1.6.0_17

MANUAL METHOD

=> Instructions for Windows XP and earlier:


• Open your browser to http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
  
• Right-click on "Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 Offline" and SAVE the download to your desktop, do not RUN it.
• Close all browser windows then double-click on the saved file (jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe) to install the update. Be patient: It may take five (5) minutes or more for the installation to complete.
• UNCHECK any optional "foistware" (e.g., Carbonite; MSN or Yahoo or Bing toolbars; OpenOffice) that you don't want to install [1]
• Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.
• Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:
  • Uninstall anything that says Sun Java, Java JRE, or similar except Java TM 6 Update 17 which you just installed.
  • Close Add/Remove Programs.
• In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder. Delete any subfolders except the subfolder named jre6. [2]
  
  Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!

• Open your browser to http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

• UNCHECK any optional "foistware" (e.g., Carbonite; MSN or Yahoo or Bing toolbars; OpenOffice) that you don't want to install [1]
• Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.
• Uninstall anything listed in Installed Programs that says Sun Java, Java JRE, or similar except Java TM 6 Update 17 which you just installed.
• In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder. Delete any subfolders except the subfolder named jre6. [2]
  
  Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!

[2] Deleting these folders may affect QuickTime. If so, simply reinstall QuickTime.
