I have a HP A6542PB which came with 1 DVDRW drive (SATA). I wanted to install another so I could transfer CD's etc from drive to drive without having to store on temp folder.

I received my Sony Optiarc AD-6249S-IB and put it into the other slot in my computer frame.
I tried to hook it up and low and behold the other data and power plug that is on my computer will not match up with this SATA drive. You would think that if the computer came with 1 SATA drive then it would have the same kind of plug. The one that is coupled with the original one has entirely a different type connection.

Now what do I do to correct this?

My computer is about 1 year and 3 months old so HP will not help.

Tom

Use a separate sata cable running from the new drive to the Motherboard. I'd check the manual. HP support.

I did and they are not as knowledgable as I was about this.

I have 6 SATA ports on my Motherboard which is IPIBL-LB (Benicia). Do I buy a SATA cable or what. Will it have both plugs on it, one for data and one for power. I know the other one comes from the power supply.

Thanks

Even though my computer came with 1 SATA DVD/RW drive, there is nothing in the manual that tells me how to connect another SATA drive. All the information is concerning drives that have to be set as slave or master and I understand SATA does not have to be set this way as there is no setting on the drive to change.

Another case of manuals not telling you correct information about the product gthat they are suppose to cover.

Get the new sata cable. On my second drive the power cable comes out of power supply and plugs into the new drive and the sata cable goes from the drive to the MB.

Match the cables up.

The drive Sony Optiarc AD-6249S-IB must be an older model. I can't find any info on it. I even checked the Sony Optiarc web site. Did a search and came up with ( No Matches )

Sorry about the typing error. The new drive is Sony/Optiarc AD-7240S-OB. It is just like my other one AD-7201S but without lightscribe and it writes at 24 instead of 22.

I have ordered me a adapter cable from 4 pin to sata along with a sata cable. This shold do the trick since I have 4 spare sata ports on my MB.
