When I insert my 4 GB flash drive in either one of my XP machines (XP Home) SP3, IE 8. I get the following message when I try to click on the drive:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an extention in the folders option control panel."

It did work and the files did open on one of my XP machines but not it will not open up in either one of them.

NOTE.....It will open up and work perfectly in my Vista machine.

What can be the problem?

Thanks

Tom

Hi,
Try deleting the autorun.ini file on the Flash Drive.
See: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 938AA8KRDL

You should also, probably, move files to another drive and format the Flash Drive.

HTH,
Don

How can you delete the auto run fine if the folder will not even open up. When I click on the folder I get the file associations mesage. Can't get the folder to open at all so can't delete anything from that folder.

How would reformating help it since it works perfectly on my Vista machine?

Thanks

Try deleting the autorun.ini file on the Flash Drive from Vista.

Could not get it to open so I could delete any file.

I reformatted the flash drive using My Computer and now it works fine in XP as well as Vista.

What I did, since I could open it up in Vista but not XP, I copies the files I wanted to keep. Formatted it with my vista machine and then placed the files back on the flash drive.

Worked fine.

Thanks,
Tom

Now make sure that the WinXP computer is fully-patched at Windows Update and that KB971029 is installed...

Update to the AutoPlay functionality in Windows:

Robear, I downloaded the patch you referred to and installed it.
I can not get either cd or dvd drive to pull up anything.
Even when I click on the drive in my computer it will not start the disc that is in the drive.
